RE: Active Quarriesi n the Proximityof Gull Lake and Brokenhead Wetland Trail Attention: Ms Gisele Smith, Chief Administrative Officer
The Gull Lake Basin Management Board (GLBMB), residents of Gull Lake, and the surrounding stakeholders are increasingly concerned regarding the adverse environmental effects the subject quarries located on private, municipal and crown lands are having on Gull Lake and the surrounding watershed and wetland areas. Over the past severalyears the subject quarries have grown exponentially, and in our opinion, "are out of control".Our main concerns are:
-
The close proximity of thesequarries to Gull Lake and surrounding watershed and wetland areas. The deforestation of the watershed area between Gull Lake to Lake Winnipeg,
-
The daily noise pollution from rock crushing,
-
The environmental concerns with risk t oground and drinking water in local aquifers,
-
The disturbance of local wildlife habitats and other ecosystems, and
-
The quarryrehabilitation plans to return quarry sites to their natural state.

The recent announcement of the Hwy 59 to Hwy 12 twinning prompts additional concerns:
-
Where will the sand and gravel for this project be extracted?
-
What is the Municipalities position on the importance of protecting the environment in and around Gull Lake, and surrounding watershed and do you have a due diligence plan in place to monitor and protect Gull Lake and surrounding watershed?
-
What is the Municipalities position on the extraction permits on quarry activity within the Gull Lake and surrounding watershed?

The GLBMB would like to work collaboratively with the Municipalityo fAlexander to ensure the sustainability and environmental protection of Gull Lake and surrounding watershed and wetland areas for future generations. We are requesting ameeting a n do r an invitation to discuss our concerns at a council meeting (date to be determined). Please feel free to contact me at 204 793-2720 or glbmb16@gmail.com at yourearliest convenience.
Best Regards,
Glenn Gray, GLBMB

2026 Seal Program
Hey Gull Lakers,

Thank you so much for taking initiative by coming to this website to get informed about the GLBMB and how to keep Gull Lake healthy.
I'd like to take this time to explain the system to get your boat on the lake.
For all cottage owners and people in the levy area, you can launch your boat without having to pay for a decontamination or seal. That said, it is recommended that you try to stick to keeping your boat solely on Gull Lake.

For this to happen, we require you to present your property tax bill along with a driver's license to show the property address matches the person requesting access to the lake.

If you arrive to the boat launch without your property tax bill, you will have to pay $50 which will be refunded when you return to produce it.

A $50 decontamination charge will only apply for non-residents of the lake.

The recommended practise for residents of the lake is to have your boat and trailer sealed by a launch attendant when you REMOVE your boat from the water. This service is offered free for residents and just $10 for non-residents. That way, when you return with the seal intact there will be no need for a new decontamination; an attendant will simply remove the seal and allow you access to the lake.

In memory of David Cairns, 1968-2025
David Cairns served as President of the GLBMB with exceptional dedication. His leadership, generosity, and commitment to the health of the lake left a lasting impact on our community.
We are deeply grateful for his contributions and hold his memory with great respect.
After Hours Launch Access:
Volunteers are not capable of performing decontaminations during off hours, but, when available, can give sealed watercrafts launch access for a $50 fee.
If you need to launch a watercraft when the Gull Lake Boat Launch is closed, please go to Selkirk Park to get your watercraft decontaminated and sealed.
Upon your return, a volunteer may be able to help you.
Contact 204-799-1554 to request access.
